Escitalopram is an antidepressant medication that works by increasing the level of serotonin (a natural 'feel-good' chemical) in your brain, helping to improve your mood, sleep, and overall sense of well-being.
Inhibits the reuptake of serotonin at the presynaptic neuronal membrane by selectively blocking the serotonin transporter (SERT), increasing synaptic serotonin concentration and enhancing serotonergic neurotransmission. This results in improved mood regulation, reduced anxiety, and normalization of obsessive-compulsive and panic-related symptoms.

Adults usually start with one 10 mg tablet once daily, taken in the morning or evening. Your doctor may increase this to 20 mg daily after a few weeks if needed. You can take it with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with water. It may take 2 to 4 weeks before you start feeling better — do not stop taking it because you think it is not working.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Never take two tablets at once to make up for a missed dose.
Do not stop taking escitalopram suddenly without your doctor's guidance — stopping abruptly can cause withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, irritability, and electric shock-like feelings. Only buy from licensed pharmacies (not roadside vendors) and ensure you get genuine brands like Ascipram or Neveux. This is a personal prescription — do not share it with someone else who seems to have similar symptoms.
Do not take escitalopram with MAO inhibitor drugs (like selegiline or phenelzine) as this combination can be very dangerous. Avoid taking it with tramadol or other serotonin-boosting drugs as it can cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome (high fever, confusion, muscle twitching). Alcohol can make the drowsiness and dizziness much worse, so it is best to avoid drinking while on this medication.
