Olanzapine is a medicine that works by balancing certain natural chemicals in the brain (like dopamine and serotonin) to help improve thinking, mood, and behavior in people with mental health conditions.
Binds to dopamine D2 receptors and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors in the mesolimbic and mesocortical pathways, antagonizing their activity to reduce psychotic symptoms and stabilize mood. Additionally blocks alpha-1 adrenergic and H1 histamine receptors, contributing to sedative effects useful in managing agitation.

Usually started at 5 mg or 10 mg once daily, taken at the same time each day — most people take it at bedtime because it can make you very sleepy. Your doctor may gradually increase the dose up to 20 mg daily depending on how you respond. You can take it with or without food. Common brands in Nigeria include Lanzep-5, Lanzep-10, Olanza-5, Olanza-10, and Impexxia.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Never take two doses at once to make up for the one you missed.
This is a strictly prescription-only medicine — do not buy it from roadside vendors or take it because someone recommended it; it must be prescribed and monitored by a qualified doctor. Do not stop taking olanzapine suddenly on your own, as this can worsen your condition — your doctor will reduce the dose gradually. Watch your weight and blood sugar regularly, as this medicine can cause significant weight gain and diabetes over time.
Avoid alcohol completely — combining it with olanzapine can make you extremely drowsy and affect your breathing. Blood pressure medicines can increase dizziness and fainting when taken together. Smoking cigarettes can reduce how well olanzapine works, so tell your doctor if you smoke or plan to stop smoking.
