Antiseptic mouthwash (oral hygiene product)
Last reviewed June 2026
Who is this for?
This is an antiseptic mouthwash that combines thymol (a natural germ-killer from thyme oil), sodium fluoride (which strengthens tooth enamel and prevents cavities), and alcohol (which helps kill bacteria in the mouth). It works by reducing the germs that cause plaque, gum disease, and bad breath.
Inhibits microbial growth and biofilm formation through multiple mechanisms: thymol disrupts bacterial cell membranes and inhibits enzyme activity, sodium fluoride strengthens enamel through fluorapatite formation and inhibits bacterial glycolytic enzymes, and alcohol (95% v/v) denatures bacterial proteins and enhances antimicrobial penetration. This synergistic action reduces pathogenic oral flora, prevents plaque accumulation, and protects against dental caries and periodontal disease.

Rinse your mouth with about 20ml (roughly 4 teaspoons or the small cap of the bottle) for 30 seconds, then spit it out. Use it twice a day — morning and night — after brushing your teeth. Do not swallow the mouthwash.
If you forget to use it, just use it the next time you remember. No need to double up — simply continue with your normal routine. It is not dangerous to miss a rinse.
Buy only from reputable pharmacies or supermarkets — check the expiry date and make sure the seal is not broken. Do not swallow the mouthwash; it is meant to be spat out after rinsing. A mouthwash is not a replacement for brushing and flossing — use it alongside your regular dental care routine.
Avoid using immediately after toothpaste containing certain ingredients as it may reduce the fluoride benefit — wait at least 5 minutes after brushing. The alcohol in the mouthwash can cause a burning feeling if you have open sores or ulcers in the mouth. If you are using any other medicated mouth treatment like chlorhexidine mouthwash, space them apart by at least 30 minutes.

Is it safe to take Thymol; with your other drugs?
Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using this mouthwash during pregnancy or breastfeeding, mainly because of the alcohol content.
Store at room temperature in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the cap tightly closed after use. Keep out of reach of children — the alcohol content can be harmful if a child drinks it.
