How do you take Artesunate?

For severe malaria, artesunate injection is given by a doctor or nurse in a hospital — you cannot self-administer this. The usual adult dose is 2.4 mg per kg body weight given intravenously at 0 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours, then once daily until you can swallow tablets, after which you switch to an oral antimalarial to complete treatment. The rectal capsule (Artecap) may be used as emergency pre-referral treatment before reaching a hospital.

Nausea or vomiting, dizziness or headache, loss of appetite, body weakness or tiredness, dark-coloured urine (this can happen a week or two after treatment and should be reported to your doctor)

People who are allergic to artesunate or any artemisinin-based drug. Women in the first trimester of pregnancy unless it is a life-threatening situation. People with known severe allergic reactions to any ingredient in the injection or rectal capsule.
