Amikacin is a strong antibiotic (aminoglycoside type) that works by killing bacteria directly, stopping them from making the proteins they need to survive. It is given by injection because it does not work when swallowed.
Binds irreversibly to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing bactericidal cell death; demonstrates concentration-dependent killing effective against aerobic gram-negative and some gram-positive organisms.

The usual adult dose is 15 mg per kg of body weight per day, split into 2 or 3 injections, or sometimes given as one daily dose. A typical course lasts 7 to 10 days. Keep at room temperature (below 30°C) or as directed on the pack. Keep out of the reach of children. Do not use if the liquid looks cloudy or has particles in it.
